Minister of National Economy visits GGateway’s IT Projects

Gaza- 1/2/2023- The Palestinian Minister of National Economy, Mr. Khaled Al-Osaily, carried out an inspection visit to a number of projects supported by the Palestinian Ministry of National Economy in the Gaza strip. During his visit, the Minister reviewed GGateway’s work methodology in the “Information Technology Projects in the Gaza Strip.” The project received a financial grant funded by the World Bank as part of the Ministry’s programs. The aim of the grant was to establish a business model specifically designed for preparing programs and projects that reduce unemployment among the youth in the Gaza Strip.

The Minister, The Head of the Minister’s Office and the Director General of International Relations Suha Awadallah inspected the plans, projects and training programs being implemented. They also listened to a number of remarkable success stories from the beneficiaries who had received training in technical fields. The Minister emphasized the importance of GGateway’s work in reducing unemployment and creating sustainable job opportunities in the field of information technology. He expressed his admiration and support for the work being carried out by GGateway and the outstanding academic and professional level of the graduates from the training programs.

GGateway CEO, Bassma Ali, stressed the significance of the support that contributed to increasing the value of business contracts with GGateway, encompassing both long-term and short-term contracts, to reach 1.3 million dollars since the initiation of the support for the innovative private sector development project. She highlighted the results achieved from this project, in which 396 trainees benefited from the market-oriented training, in addition to the development of the company’s hiring program which facilitates the recruitment process and enhances connections with regional and international private businesses.

As for their part, the beneficiaries emphasized the importance of the program’s sustainability in empowering start-up companies to persistently thrive and integrate effectively into the national economy.

“Embedded Systems Development” Bootcamp Launched

GGateway recently launched a new Embedded Systems Development bootcamp for hardware engineers, focused on ARM-Cortex development. The bootcamp is designed to rapidly accelerate the trainees skill sets and prepare them to enter GGateway’s Long-term Training and Hiring Program. Eleven trainees have entered the bootcamp, most of them new graduates in technology majors.

Embedded systems feature combinations of computer hardware and software designed for a specific function, and are an integral part of our technologically advanced societies. Applications for the training include helping to design and develop industrial equipment, consumer electronics, automobiles, medical equipment, cameras, digital watches, household appliances, aeroplanes, agricultural and processing industry devices, vending machines and toys, and mobile devices.

By the end of the bootcamp, it is expected that trainees will be ready to be employed by clients in the hardware/Embedded Systems outsourcing industry. They will have the skills to build their own Embedded Systems Libraries, develop ARM-based products, and work within a team or individually to program any ARM-based microcontroller to a professional standard.

GGateway’s 6-month ReactJS Bootcamp

Due to the accelerating need for skilled talent in technology development, GGateway has launched a 6-month bootcamp in React.Js for technology major graduates, as part of its Long-Term Training and Hiring Program. The bootcamp was developed in response to rapidly shifting global trends within the field of computer programming.

Between November 2021 and March 2022 the training was provided to 15 junior and mid-level IT graduates and workers, in React.Js — one of the most popular Javascript libraries, used for building front-end apps. The goal of the bootcamp was to enhance the employability of trainees in specialised tech services, and ensure that they can compete within an ever-changing global market.

At the end of the training bootcamp, 73% of the trainees obtained long-term employment, either within GGateway Business Operations, through our Outsourcing Program with clients, or with remote international clients.

The remaining graduates are receiving career development guidance and coaching to further qualify them for successful employment in the industry, either with GGateway or with private sector companies and remote employers.

This programme is one of many activities supported by the World Bank through its Innovation Private Sector Development program (IPSD), which is helping GGateway to scale up as a leading, regional outsourcing hub.

GGateway’s 6-month Software Quality Assurance Bootcamp

Launched in October 2021, GGateway’s 6-month Software Quality Assurance boot camp was completed in March 2022. The bootcamp was part of the Long-term Training and Hiring Program for tech majors, aimed at significantly boosting skills in a short space of time.

We developed this bootcamp in response to the rapid changes in the field of software quality brought on by the constant inflow of new technologies. The goal of this training was to provide IT professionals with industry best practices, allowing them to ensure that their work adheres to global standards and that they can adapt to an ever-changing technology landscape.

The program targeted 15 junior and mid-level graduates in IT to gain new skills in the field and accelerate their careers, particularly in Software Quality Assurance methods and relevant career development strategies.

Thanks to the skills learned in this bootcamp, 73% of graduates obtained long-term employment after the training, either within GGateway’s Business Operations, private sector companies in Palestine, through our Outsourcing Program, or with other remote clients across the globe. The remaining graduates continue to receive career development guidance and learning opportunities, to help them become successfully employed in the industry.

GGateway Organizes a Workshop on “The Future of E”

On Monday, March 22, 2021, GGateway, in partnership with the United Nations Development Program / Program for Assistance to the Palestinian People in the Gaza Strip, held a workshop entitled “The Future of Digital Work.” Several international and educational institutions and private companies were invited to participate in the workshop’s activities to discuss many topics about digital development and how it can help reduce unemployment. The workshop included presenting the success stories of students who joined the project.

The workshop was inaugurated by the project manager at GGateway, Muhammad Farwana, with a welcoming speech and a talk about the project and its achievements. There were two discussion sessions on the reality and future of digital work. Muhammad Farwana opened the first session, “The Reality of Digital Work,” in which Eng. Islam Mazyad, Chief Technology Officer, GGateway, Eng. Ismail Al-Wahidi and Eng. Fadwa Aweidah, trainers, and supervisors in freelancing skills contributed fruitfully to the discussion. This session addressed the reality of digital work in the Gaza Strip within freelancing and digital work. It provided perspectives on the reality of digital work, particularly in Palestine and the Gaza Strip.

The second discussion session revolved around “The Future of Digital Work.” This session was moderated by Khaled Nabhan, a business development specialist in the program and director of creativity at Gateway, Hani Shehadeh, representative of the Education Above All Foundation, Hala Othman, Director of Environment and Poverty Alleviation Programs at the United Nations Development Program, Program of Assistance to the Palestinian People, Ashraf El Yazouri, General Manager of Vision Plus, and Mohamed Farwana, Project Manager of GGateway.

The session discussed the future of digital work and its dimensions in the Gaza Strip within horizons of; Self-employment, freelancing, outsourcing, e-commerce, and digital entrepreneurship. The session provides perspectives on future aspirations for Palestine and the Gaza Strip’s potential, particularly in digital work.

Apex (E-Work) project is part of Al Fakhoora Scholarship and Empowerment Program, it aims to develop practical technical aspects and self-employment skills for graduates of Al Fakhoora Scholarship and Empowerment Program to qualify and refine their abilities, providing them with contemporary useful tools and skills to suit the requirements of work in freelancing platforms. This will assist graduates in creating job opportunities through freelancing and the remote work market.

Since the beginning of the program, 91 graduates from Al Fakhoora Scholarship and Empowerment Program have been selected to join the project’s technical training phase, which consists of 70 training hours in five different areas: digital marketing, translation, web application development (WordPress), virtual assistant, and graphic design. The selected beneficiaries were divided into six training groups with 15-20 beneficiaries each. 45 of the 91 beneficiaries selected in the technical training phase qualified for the freelancing and business skills training phase based on a competitive assessment process.

The freelancing and business skills training phase consists of 78 training hours. It includes four main components: Freelance platforms and employment skills, technical English writing for freelancing, soft skills, and digital marketing skills for freelancing. The best 35 achievers from the Technical, Freelancing, and Business Skills training phases were selected to be hosted within the GGateway co-working space (GHub) for two and a half months.

During the hosting phase, beneficiaries receive technical guidance and mentoring on freelancing skills as well as specialized career path advice from professional mentors. Hosted beneficiaries receive personalized workspaces, as well as online learning resources based on their specific needs. The purpose of the hosting phase for the beneficiaries is to impart the knowledge gained in both technical and freelancing skills training and thus be eligible to receive and generate sustainable income. By the end of the project, all hosted beneficiaries managed to get online jobs with a grand total earning of 43,000 USD throughout the hosting phase.

It is worth mentioning that the project closing ceremony was held last week on Sunday, March 14, 2021. It included a speech from UNDP’s representative, Ms. Chitose Noguchi, and another speech for the AL Fakhoora program delivered by the representative of Education above All, Hani Shehadah. During the ceremony, certificates were distributed to the beneficiaries and trainers of the program. Al Fakhoora Scholarship and Empowerment Program is funded by Al Fakhoora Program, one of the Education Above All Foundation programs in Qatar, and implemented by UNDP/PAPP in partnership with the NGOs.

Noor Abo Hasira, Beneficiary of GGateway’s Outsourcing Program

The opportunity gave me excellent experience in the field and empowered me to be an independent female tech professional, both socially and financially in male-dominated industry and culture.

I am Noor Abo Hasira. I am a Computer Engineering graduate in 2020 with a GPA of 94.33% as a first rank. I then worked as a teacher’s assistant at the university for a year.

After that, I started searching for a new job, but I found this difficult given the high unemployment rate among youth, especially females in Palestine. I heard that GGateway had announced an opportunity as a Business Analyst (BA) with one of its outsourcing clients. I was fortunate enough to join the technical interviews and ultimately was one of the best achievers in the interviews. GGateway business operation offered me a long-term contract that starts with on-the-job training for three months and then full-time paid job for more than 1 year as BA in GGateway outsourcing operation.

It was a special opportunity for me to become a Business Analyst, as there is high demand for this role in the international market. The opportunity gave me excellent experience in the field and empowered me to be an independent female tech professional, both socially and financially in male-dominated industry and culture. I’m looking forward to progressing to more senior positions in the future either as a Lead Business Analyst or Project Manager.

Yehia Zeidan

Yehia Zeidan was a trainee with GGateway’s Short-term Training and Hiring Program, who is specializing in Translation and Content Writing.

I could not be prouder of the great leap of development in my technical and personal skills, and I am really thankful for this great workplace.

In August 2021, all Cohort 2 trainees of the Short-term training and hiring program participated in a competition to present their different achievements in both training projects and jobs secured on freelancing platforms.

This competition served as a major stepping stone during and after the training program. Being among a group of elite freelancers left me no option but to bend over backwards and exert a lot of effort and perseverance to get to the top.

I completed the training with earnings of more than US$8,000 throughout the program period, leaving me with a profound sense of belonging to the place, time, and people.

Abdullah Al-Sahar

Abdullah Al-Sahar was a trainee in GGateway’s Long-term Training and Hiring Program, and a beneficiary of the Outsourcing Program.

The presence of mentors and knowledge sources that I was already familiar with, as well as my coworkers with whom I shared experiences, contributed greatly to me producing good results. Thank you to GGateway, which helped me to make a fresh start and also supported me to help others to do so.

I am Abdullah Al-Sahar. I worked in many fields of freelancing before joining GGateway, including frontend and back-end web development, and mobile app development. I knew about GGateway through following their social media channels, and I thought it was only for training.

But one day I saw an announcement that they were looking to hire and outsource those who had good skills in back-end web development. I applied and got a one-year job opportunity after I received training in the newly indemand field of SalesForce Commerce Cloud (SFCC). Before the GGateway opportunity came along, I had faced many difficulties while I was working as a freelancer, where I had to work on anything I could in order to earn income. But now, I credit GGateway with clarifying many things for me relating to my work as a freelancer – I discovered that I had been getting distracted by trying to master more than one field before joining GGateway, and now I know precisely what I want to work on.

I successfully completed my intensive training with high performance results within one month, a shorter period of time than was expected, which encouraged the outsourcing client to hire me directly as a SalesForce Commerce Developer. During my employment, I joined a team with an international trade site and acquired new knowledge and experience by being assigned different tasks regularly. GGateway supported me in my journey and assigned me a mentor to help me overcome any obstacles I faced during my employment. Although challenging, that job was my first great step towards success. My advice to people who read my story is to surround yourself with successful and experienced people in your field. Cooperation with others was my key to success. Our path is full of difficulties, but we keep moving on with an outstanding spirit to achieve. Thank you to GGateway, which helped me to make a fresh start.

Tasneem Jehad Abdelhadi

Tasneem Jehad Abdelhadi is a trainee with GGateway’s Short-term Training and Hiring Program, who is specializing in Translation and Content Writing.

Doing this training contributed greatly to my transformation from a miserable graduate who had lost her aspirations, to a diligent and ambitious person who bears all pressure with an open heart. I hope that GGateway’s training can also be the turning point in the life of every graduate who finds and strives to reach this path.

I am Tasneem Jehad Abdelhadi, an English graduate of the Islamic University of Gaza. I am from Khan Younis Camp in the Gaza Strip. I am a mother of three children, the youngest just four years old. I graduated in 2017, and unfortunately, I had not had any job opportunities up to this point, despite my high GPA and applying for many jobs.

I have experienced societal frustration at my passion, love, and curiosity to learn and work, and many have pointed the finger of blame, asking why all this insistence on work, and telling me it is better to take care of your home and your children. This has only increased my determination to change society’s views on the role of women as being limited to her home, husband, and children, and that her testimony is just ink on paper.

After being accepted into GGateway’s training program, I have learned a lot from the best trainers in well-equipped offices, and I appreciate the gentle and ethical manner in which they deal with us as trainees. In addition, the family-friendly atmosphere means I don’t hesitate even for a moment to attend all lectures, especially because there are thousands of graduates who are dreaming about sitting on our seats and reaping what our trainers sow, even if it is at their own expense.

Anwar Awad, a prominent figure in the tech industry, serves as the Chairman at GGateway. With a career spanning over three decades, Anwar has made impactful contributions in strategic leadership roles within the technology sector.

Before joining GGateway, Anwar held significant positions at Toshiba America, Synopsys, and Intel Corporation. His tenure at Intel as GM and VP of the Design Engineering Group was marked by strategic transformations in design and methodology. At Synopsys, he led the successful development of mixed signal IP product lines and initiated pioneering global engineering initiatives.

Anwar earned his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stony Brook University and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Jordan.
